With cinemas about to make thier long awaited return on Monday and it also see’s the return of Maya The Bee in Maya The Bee 3: The Golden Orb. So to celebrate the release of Maya The Bee 3: The Golden Orb, we here at Screen One decided it was time to countdown the top 5 family movies about insects! 5. Maya The Bee (2014) Prime Video – Where better to start than with Maya herself? Freshly hatched bee Maya is a little whirlwind and won’t follow the rules of the hive. One of these rules is not to trust the hornets that live beyond the meadow. When the Royal Jelly is stolen, the hornets are suspected and Maya is thought to be their accomplice. No one believes that she is the innocent victim and no one will stand by her except for her good-natured and best friend Willy. After a long and eventful journey to the hornets hive Maya and Willy soon discover the true culprit and the two friends finally bond with the other residents of the opulent meadow. A great little movie that has become rather popular over time hence the incoming release of the 3 installment The Golden Orb on Monday.

James And The Giant Peach (1996) NOWTV – 3 years after the huge sucess of The Nightmare Before Christmas, director Henry Sellick went on to bring us another stop motion classic, this time of the Roald Dahl classic book, James and Ginat Peach. With the supersized but friendly bugs in tow, james embarks on a exciting adventure. An orphaned boy drops magical crocodile tongues which later grow into a never-ending peach tree. He finds his new family which are six insects that help him on his adventure.

Antz (1998) Not on streaming – With a simply tremendous voice cast (Woody Allen, Sylvester Stallone, Gene Hackman, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Dan Ackroyd and many more) Antz went up against Disney/Pixar’s A Bugs Life and while it lost the box office battle, it’s still a fun watch. A rather neurotic ant tries to break from his totalitarian society while trying to win the affection of the princess he loves.

2. Arachnophobia (1990) Not on streaming – “Eight legs. Two fangs. And an attitude.” Long time Steven Spielberg collaborator Frank Marshall, has only directed a few movies in his career (Alive, Congo) but Arachnophobia is his best. A simply made movie about a deadly South American spider that ends up in smalltown USA, that creates havoc when it breeds with a local spider and the spawn infest the small town and start to cause the deaths of the locals. It’s up to a local doctor (Jeff Daniels) who enlists the help of an exterminator (John Goodman) to save the town. Dr James Atherton moves to a small town and witnesses a series of unexplainable deaths of the locals. Upon investigating, he discovers that a flock of spiders are responsible for it.

  1. A Bugs Life (1998) Disney+ – Let’s be honest, what else was going to top this list? The simply classic A Bugs Life, Pixars reworking of the Seven Samurai, was one of the ealiest movies from the studio and to this day one of their most loved. From the wide-eyed hero Flik to the dastardly Hopper, every frame of this film is an absolute joy to behold and if you haven’t watched it in a while, maybe it’s time to revisit it! Flik, an inventor, leads an army of ants against a group of grasshoppers who steal their food every year. He also enlists a troop of circus bugs to help him.
