The Top 10

10. X (Dir. Ti West) Starring: Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi

The return of genuinely disturbing horror tropes. With some creative blood and guts, Ti West’s X not only reinvigorated the genre, but made a star out of Mia Goth. With twists and turns it’s a throwback to Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the kids in well over thier collective heads. Setting up a trilogy of films (Pearl & MaXXXine) with Mia Goth playing the central character in each, it’s turned the final genre on it’s head and left audiences everywhere wanting more.

9. The Northman (Dir. Robert Eggers) Starring: Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Anna Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawk, Bjork, Willem Dafoe

Robert Egger’s visceral vision in a tale of betrayl and revenge. THe cinematography is outstanding and Aelxander Skarsgard’s feral and violent ‘Northman’ who seeks revenge on his Uncle after he murders his tribal chief father is quite the cinematic vision.

8. Elvis (Dir. Baz Luhrmann) Starring: Austin Butler, Tom Hanks

No doubts come awards season, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic will be featuring heavily, especially Austin Butler’s turn as the ‘King’ which is nothing short of hypnotically good. Tom Hanks plays against his normal type as the shady Col. Tom Parker, Elvis manager. The msuic is great, it looks great and indeed is great!

7. Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical (Dir. Matthew Warchus) Starring: Emma Thompson, Alisha Weir, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough

Probably the best musical to hit the big screen since The Greatest Showman. With music from Tim Minchin, Matilda is a great piece of family entertainment. Netflix has hit onto a winner here even if the outcry of it not hitting the streaming service until summer of 23.

6. All Quiet On The Western Front (Dir. Edward Berger) Starring: Daniel Bruhl, Felix Kammerer, Albrect Schuch, Aaron Hilmer

This remake of the brutal anti war novel of the same name is, a gritty, painful but essential watch. The battle sequences are unflinching and hard to bear at times, but in the same instance beautifully shot with a haunting soundtrack, another big winner for Netflix in 2022.

5. Ennio (Dir. Giuseppe Tornatore) Featuring: Ennio Morricone, Quentin Tarantino, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Springsteen

This exemplary documentary on the legendary composer Ennio Morricone, leaves no stone unturned in covering the life of one of movies greatest composers. Utterly consuming, the documentary shares everything you could ever know and more and of course includes all of the famous scores and how they came to be created.

4. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Dir. Rian Johnson) Starring: Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, kKathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista

The sequel of sorts to Knives Out, takes Beniot Blanc on a different journey to a island where another mystery unfolds. With twists and turns at every corner, it’s an absolute joy and another home run for Rian Johnson and Netflix. Now with Part III now confirmed, we can’t wait to see what’s in store next for Detective Blanc.

3. The Menu (Dir. Mark Mylod) Starring: Anna Taylor-Joy, Ralph Fiennes, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer

Visually stunning, this fantastic original black comedy horror, is a real ‘pallete cleasner. Once again Anna Taylor-Joy who seemingly can do no wrong currently here at the Screen One offices, stars brilliantly as the story unfolds and the inevitable conclusion creeps up. One of those movies that the less you know the more you will get out of it.

2. The Batman (Dir. Matt Reeves) Starring: Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis

Don’t call it a reboot, this version of Batman is set early in the Caped Crusaders early days, with more of the Detective comics feel, this play’s out like a Godfather movie, run time included. Pattinson is perfect as the conflicted and mourning Bruce Wayne / Batman. For once not having the Joker all over proceedings is. anice change and Dano’s Riddler is creepy and dangerous.

And Screen One’s Number 1 movie of 2022 is…

1. Top Gun Maverick (Dir. Joseph Kosinski) Starring: Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell

Simply the best action blockbuster to hit cinema screens in years, much like Ghostbusters: Afterlife last year, one of the most anticpated sequels since the 80’s original. Cruise once again puts his own body at risk, filming most of the daring ariel sequences himself, the insurance companies were most liekly praying to every God they could think of on a daily basis. Genuinely edge of your seat stuff until the very end. Read our review HERE
