THe Five Heartbeats Dir: Robert Townsend Stream: Not currently available on streaming platforms
Coming in on the tail end of a rhythm and blues singing group explosion, The Five Heartbeats (Robert Townsend, Michael Wright, Leon, Harry J. Lennix, Tico Wells) rise and fall within the space of seven years. Along the way, the group deals with all manner of fame and fortune distractions — jealousy, greed, too much womanizing and drugs all take a toll. Their troubles culminate when executive Big Red (Hawthorne James) is arrested for the murder of manager Jimmy Potter (Chuck Patterson)
Release date: 5 June 1992 (UK)
Criminally overlooked and not much seen, Robert Townsend’s The Five Heartbeats is an absolute classic. It’s also one of us here at Screen One’s all time favourite musicasl and if that’s not a reason to watch it, we don’t know what is. Note perfect, superb storytelling and Robert Townsend’s pinnacle of his directing and acting career. Much loved, re-watched and just generally always worth a watch, if you can find it make sure you watch it as soon as you can, and it will soon be one that you come back to time and time again.
