The powerful and uplifting documentary film, Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It, will be released on digital download from 6 December. With intimate access and exclusive archive material, this is a loving cinematic journey that details the life of a groundbreaking artist.
Over a career spanning more than 70 years, Rita Moreno defied both her humble upbringing and relentless racism to become a celebrated and award-winning actor. Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It explores the lesser-known struggles Moreno faced on her path to stardom, including pernicious Hollywood sexism and sexual abuse, a toxic relationship with Marlon Brando, and her attempted suicide a year before she won an Oscar for her role as Anita in West Side Story (1961).
Directed by award-winning, Mariem Pérez Riera, the film features interviews with Latinx artists including Eva Longoria, Gloria Estefan, Justina Machado and Executive Producer, Lin-Manuel Miranda reflecting on their own experiences while celebrating the woman who was the first Latina to win an Academy Award and one of only a handful of performers to also win Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. Other interviewees include longtime friend and co-star Morgan Freeman and fellow EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg.
The film shines a light on the discrimination prevalent in the film studio system and demonstrates Moreno’s talent and resilience as she broke barriers and paved the way for new generations of artists. Moreno refused to be pigeonholed and fought for Latino representation in a variety of genres, while also taking part in some of the most important civil rights campaigns of the past sixty years.
