Review: Titane

Titane, is a truly interesting beast of a film in every sense of the word.  Director Julia Ducournau (Raw) has produced one of the most incendiary movies of 2021.  Titane is going to rock you to very core, whether it’s a film that you love or detest it gives you ample room for both.

Following a series of unexplained crimes, a father is reunited with the son who has been missing for 10 years. Titane: A metal highly resistant to heat and corrosion, with high tensile strength alloys.

Where to begin with this visceral body horror/thriller that will keep you off balance from the get go.  Ducournau wants to let you know, this is no light and fluffy drama, this is a full on gut punch of a movie that will most likely have you jaw agape for the majority of the run time.  It’s another one of those films that the less you know before watching it, the more you’re likely to get from the entire experience.

Titane is in cinemas now.

Titane is a brutal, uncomfortable journey that just increases the intensity as each minute progresses.  From the opening moments to the first sequence where Alexia (Agatha Rousselle in a confounding but brilliant performance) has sex with a car.  (This is one of the more sane moments of Titane), to her makeshift attempt at a abortion (Think Linda Blair in the Exorcist with that cross and replace it with a knitting needle, you get the picture…) to the third act when grieving father, Vincent (Vincent Lindon) enters the story, you literally will be aghast with a range of emotions that will leave you drained and elated.

What Julia Ducournau has achieved with Titane is at times highly offensive, while being incredibly lyrical at the same time.  It’s the ultimate contrary film for your senses.  You want to look away, you’ll probably want to stop watching, but you simply can’t its an enigma of a film.  But one you can’t be told what to expect, you’ll just have to witness it for yourself.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Titane is in cinemas now and will be available on Digital from February 7th at Altitude Films
