Review: Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate

Mortal Kombat is back! And in a big way. With the release of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate across all platforms including the new next gen consoles PS5 and XBox Series X, the voilence and gore of this classic beat em up has never looked better.

NetherRealm have really stepped up a gear here, with all the layers and adaptability and nuances of each indivdual character and with what is one of the most packed rosters they’ve ever had you have plenty to choose from. All of the original game cast are here as well as some of the kids, classic villians, a batch of new characters and some additional movie characters such as Rambo, The Terminator, Joker and Spawn round out the roster which will leave you playing for weeks if you want to complete all the different modes and storylines.

Also, new this time is for PS4 and Xbox owners is not only 4k but ‘kross play’ which allows competition from across the platforms. Joining that is a new Kreate mode whihc you can adapt and play with to your hearts delight.

Never have the graphics looked richer, the game play so smooth and the violence ramped up to the point you can feel every bone crunch , body tear and blood spatterings everywhere you go. The only negative to this edition of the game in Krypt, which while is a fun staple of the game, the new RPGesque style of finding everything and completing puzzles, is hampered by the fact all the boxes are randomized, so you don’t know what you aer going to get. Added to this it’s a real grind to collect the various things such as hearts to open some boxes. You ge a heart for each fatality, but at 250 hearts for some boxes (Which are randomized) you are likely going to have to succumb to the lootbox style for getting them easier that MK have now enabled.

Other than that, and at the end of the day it’s a choice if you want to spend on it, this is probably the best ever incarnation of the game we have seen so far. So stop what you are doing, get over here (After the pretty hefty game downoad file) and punch, kick, slam and generally destroy your way to the top of the best Mortal Kombat yet.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
This review was conducted on the PS4 version of the game.
