Would you believe that it’s the 30th Anniversary of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? Well, it is and to celebrate that Netflix are releasing a one off special “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always” on 19th April to celebrate that.
Thirty years after the wise and powerful Zordon formed the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the team comes face to face with a familiar threat from the past. In the midst of a global crisis, they are called on once again to be the heroes the world needs. This 30th Anniversary Special is inspired by the legendary mantra from the franchise “Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger,” meaning once you become part of the Ranger family, you are always welcome back.
The story details thus far sees Rita Repulsa travel back in time to try and change history. Trini Kwan (The late Thuy Trang), the original Yellow Ranger is seemingly killed by Rita and her daughter Minh Kwan (Akira Nakanishi) seemingly will join forces with the legacy Rangers to do battle with Rita and the Putties.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always brings back some of the OG cast and some legends from the various series. Heading up the team are the original Black and Blue Rangers (Walter Jones & David Yost). Joining them are Rocky and Kat the second incarnations of the Red and Pink Rangers (Steve Cardenas & Catherine Sutherland) and some other favourites, such as Alpha and the aforementioned Rita Repulsa.
Unfortunately the whole cast couldn’t be reunited, with Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank who have tragically passed away, although the show is set to be revolving around thier characters and dedicated to them. Austin St. John who was the original Red Ranger wasn’t able to appear due to legal issues and the producers couldn’t come to terms with Amy Jo Johnson, The original Pink Ranger, Kimberley.
There are plenty of other easter eggs seen in the trailer.
During the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always trailer, Alpha is seen activating the “Bandora Protocol”, which is named after Witch Bandora, Rita Repulsa’s counterpart from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (Super Sentai – the original Japanese series that Power Rangers was created from). The computer screen in the trailer also shows several place names in the Power Rangers universe:
- Coral Harbor from Beast Morphers
- Reefside from Dino Thunder
- Astro Megaship from In Space
- Turtle Cove from Wild Force
- Terra Venture from Lost Galaxy
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is directed by Charlie Haskell, who has directed a vast number of episodes of Power Rangers across many seasons.
