Review: The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard sees Reynolds, Jackson and Hayek return for a sequel to The Hitman’s Bodyguard, an immensely popular action comedy featuring lots of violence and could language, but was actually really good fun. The question is can the sequel bring us something more?

The world’s most lethal odd couple, bodyguard Michael Bryce and hit man Darius Kincaid, are back for another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius’s even more volatile wife. Soon, all three are in over their heads when a madman’s sinister plot threatens to leave Europe in total chaos.

Let’s get this out of the way early. There is nothing original here. This is a money making sequel with big stars (The sequel adds Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo and Antonio Banderas to the mix). But if that doesn’t bother you then you are in for a rip roaring great time. The jokes hit overtime the action is great, event hough you know what’s coming and Salma Hayek is absolutely outstanding.

The rent-a-script story, decamps quickly to Europe, with Banderas ready to reek havoc as a Greek?! extremist trying to up end the EU. Banderas is on full on crazy here with wardrobe and hair to match. Reynolds turns up the annoying to all new levels and Jackson and Hayek swear like it’s going out of fashion. It all boils down to one thing. Is it fun? Yes it is.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard has more unrealistic action than Bond film, more vulgar language than Deadpool and more nonsense than you can shake a stick at. But in the times we are currently living in, it’s never been more welcome.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
