Vertigo Releasing is excited to announce the release of GANGSTER NO. 1, the notorious 2000 classic starring Malcolm McDowell (A CLOCKWORK ORANGE), Paul Bettany (LEGION),David Thewlis (THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS), and Andrew Lincoln (THE WALKING DEAD).
GANGSTER NO. 1 follows the undisputed king of London’s gangland (McDowell), who, after hearing that his old boss and mentor Freddie Mays (Thewlis), is being released from prison after 30 years, starts to become anxious. As the narrative flashes back to the 1960’s, it’s revealed that The Gangster had allowed Mays’ arch-nemesis, Lennie Taylor (Jamie Foreman), to attack him without intervening, which ultimately leads to him taking over the empire. However, despite the riches that he’s accumulated, The Gangster’s conscience comes back to bite him in this gripping tale of betrayal and revenge.
GANGSTER NO 1 was originally released on June 9th 2000, to an opening weekend UK Box Office £4400, before eventually totalling £24,672 at the UK Box Office. Since its initial release, GANGSTER NO 1 has gone on to become an iconic staple of the British Gangster genre.
Vertigo Releasing is planning to release the title across digital platforms on December 13th 2024.
