Detective Chinatown 1900 Review: When Screwball Meets Social Commentary

Detective Chinatown 1900 Screen One Review cover

The latest installment in the Detective Chinatown franchise, Detective Chinatown 1900, takes a step back in time to San Francisco’s Chinatown at the turn of the century. Directed by Chen Sicheng and Dai Mo, this prequel delivers a mix of slapstick comedy, mystery, and social commentary, though not always in a cohesive way.

Chinatown San Francisco, 1900. Chaos erupts as a local woman is murdered and all eyes fall on a Chinese man as the prime suspect… Enter the most eccentric Detective Chinatown duo—thrown together by sheer chance to solve the case. Get ready for the latest instalment of the highest-grossing detective comedy franchise of all time!

While the film features some genuinely entertaining screwball elements and the cast seems to be having a blast, the tonal shifts are jarring. One moment, it leans into its zany detective caper roots, and the next, it pivots into nationalistic propaganda and a heavy-handed exploration of racism, which, while an important theme, often overshadows the core mystery narrative. The subplot regarding white American prejudice towards the Chinese community is a compelling addition but frequently becomes so dominant that it muddles the film’s identity—is this a detective comedy or something else entirely?

The performances are a mixed bag. Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran carry the film with their established chemistry, while Chow Yun Fat’s special appearance adds gravitas. However, the English-speaking actors portraying Sherlock and Watson give such stiff, staccato performances that their scenes become unintentionally distracting—thankfully, their screen time is minimal.

Despite its frantic pacing, the film overstays its welcome, feeling overlong despite its energetic execution. While it offers plenty of wry smiles and clever moments, the inconsistent tone prevents it from reaching the highs of previous entries. Still, for fans of the franchise, it’s an enjoyable—if uneven—ride.

A fun but flawed prequel that struggles to balance its comedic and dramatic elements. Worth watching for fans, but temper expectations.
