If you’re a fan of the Despicable Me series, there’s plenty to enjoy in Despicable Me 4. The familiar charm, zany antics, and the loveable (if slightly overexposed) Minions are all back for another round. However, while the film delivers the expected laughs and heartwarming moments, it also feels like the series is starting to show signs of fatigue.
The Minions, once the undeniable highlight of the franchise, now seem to weigh down the story’s progression. Their antics, which used to be a delightful side dish, are starting to feel like they’ve overstayed their welcome. The introduction of the Mega Minions adds some freshness, but you can’t shake the feeling that another spinoff is inevitable—and perhaps overdue.
The voice cast remains stellar, with Steve Carell’s Gru as endearing as ever, especially as he grapples with the challenges of new parenthood. However, Will Ferrell, the latest addition to the cast, doesn’t quite hit the mark. His performance feels phoned in, lacking the spark needed to bring a new, memorable character to life. It’s a missed opportunity, given Ferrell’s comedic talents.
The film is clearly aimed at keeping the younger audience entertained, and in that regard, it succeeds. There are enough slapstick moments and colorful chaos to keep kids engaged, but for parents, Despicable Me 4 may feel like more of the same. The best gag—The Minions hilariously misfired “Fire in the Holeee!”—was unfortunately given away in the trailer, leaving few surprises in the actual movie.
The Blu Ray/DVD Digital release comes with a couple of extras in the shape of Two Minion Mini Movies (Game Over And Over and Benny’s Birthday).
In the end, Despicable Me 4 is a solid, if predictable, entry in the series. It’s a fun watch for kids and will bring some raised smiles to adults, but it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessors. Fans of the franchise will likely enjoy it, but for everyone else, it’s a three-star experience that’s enjoyable but forgettable.
