Biting, Brilliant, and Absolutely Beguiling— Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical is Irresistible

Cruel Intentions Screen One Review Cover

There are few movies that truly define the ’90s, and Cruel Intentions is undoubtedly one of them. Alongside the likes of Titanic, Sister Act, and Clueless, this cult classic has now made the jump from screen to stage—this time with a jukebox musical twist. And while that approach can sometimes feel lazy, Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical smashes every expectation, delivering a hilariously sharp, irresistibly sexy, and joyfully nostalgic night at the theatre.

Opening its UK tour at the New Wimbledon Theatre last night (25th Feb), the production weaves the seductive, scandalous story of step-siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil’s twisted games of desire and deception into a setlist of perfectly placed ‘90s pop hits. Boyz II Men’s I’ll Make Love to You oozes charm, TLC’s No Scrubs lands with biting wit, and the soundtrack is packed with bangers from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Ace of Base, R.E.M., NSYNC, and more. Each track isn’t just a nostalgia hit—it drives the story forward, making every moment feel both fresh and familiar.

From the moment Sarah Michelle Gellar herself welcomes the audience with a cheeky message (“You f’n losers!”), it’s clear this show is here to have fun. And fun is exactly what this electrifying young cast delivers.

Leading the charge is Nic Myers as Kathryn, who is nothing short of mesmerizing. With a performance dripping in sultry villainy, she may even outdo Gellar’s original. Will Callan’s Sebastian is soulful, seductive, and his vocals are nothing short of glorious, enriching every lyric with depth. Meanwhile, Abbie Budden’s Annette is a radiant force, balancing innocence with fiery determination, culminating in a show-stopping final act.

But it’s not just the central trio that shines. Luke Conner Hall and Joe Simmons, as the unexpected yet utterly charming lovers Blaine and Greg, steal scene after scene with riotous comedic timing. Lucy Carter’s Cecile is hilariously naive, yet wickedly endearing, while Kevin Yates’ Ronald provides a grounded, heartfelt presence amid the chaos.

The production itself embraces a stripped-back, almost minimalist approach, allowing the razor-sharp script, powerhouse vocals, and explosive chemistry to take center stage. And while the show doesn’t shy away from the bold, provocative themes of the film—including manipulation, seduction, and power dynamics—it never feels gratuitous (A butt cheek or two aside). Instead, it leans into the satirical, wickedly fun nature of the story while still delivering gut-punch emotional moments.

For those nostalgic for the ‘90s (and old enough to remember how truly shocking it was to hear a female character unapologetically enjoy sex), Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical is an absolute must-see. It’s an unfiltered, unapologetic, and utterly addictive production that leaves you grinning, gasping, and singing along.

This is no show for younger audiences, but for everyone else—this is hands down one of the best musicals on tour right now.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
