Neo-noir drama BLACK DOG will open in cinemas on 30th August 2024, released by Trinity CineAsia. BLACK DOG, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize, also saw its lead canine, Xiao Xin, a Jack Russell-greyhound cross, receive the Grand Jury Prize at the Palm Dog Award. It is not only the first Chinese-language film to win an award in the Un Certain Regard strand in 18 years since Luxury Car (2006), but also the only Chinese-language film to win an award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
BLACK DOG will have its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (August 15-21, 2024), where it has been selected to screen Out of Competition.
On the edge of the Gobi Desert in Northwest China, Lang returns to his hometown after being released from jail. While working for the local stray dog patrol team, clearing the town before the 2008 Olympic Games, he strikes up an unlikely connection with a black dog. These two lonely souls now embark on a new journey together.
Directed by Guan Hu, BLACK DOG features Eddie Peng (Operation Mekong, Rise of the Legend), Jia Zhangke (Caught by the Tides, Xiao Wu, Ash Is Purest White) as well as Zhang Yi (Full River Red, Mountains May Depart) and Tong Liya (The Wandering Earth II, Detective Chinatown)
