The original and the best. Wes Craven starting a meta movement that was a clever combination of layers within layers of horror movies. From the shocking opening with Drew Barrymore that also set up the premise that no one is really safe anymore in Horror movies. With a great cast and biting script, it keeps you guessing to the final reveal. Several sequels and a reboot later, the franchise is going strong, but unlike Wes Craven’s other horror franchise (Nightmare on Elm Street) the sequels actually got better.
